I Don't Trust AI Interviewers. Here's What Changed My Mind.
Every serious objection to AI-assisted screening — and what the evidence actually says.
Skepticism about AI interviewers is not irrational. It's actually the correct starting position. The category is new, the claims are large, and the consequences of getting it wrong — filtering out strong candidates, introducing new biases, damaging employer brand — are real.
This post is for the people who've sat through an AI interviewer demo and thought: this looks impressive, but I don't buy it yet. Here are the most common objections we hear, taken seriously, with honest answers.
Objection 1: "AI can't actually evaluate a candidate. It just pattern-matches."
This is the right concern to start with, because it's the most technically grounded.
Early AI interviewer tools were essentially chatbots with a script. They asked pre-written questions, accepted whatever the candidate said, and generated a boilerplate summary. Pattern-matching to a rubric wasn't evaluation — it was checkbox completion. And if a candidate figured out the rubric, they could game it easily.
What's changed is the underlying capability of large language models, and specifically how the best tools now use them. A well-built AI interviewer isn't scoring keywords — it's engaging with the substance of what a candidate says, noticing when an answer is vague and pressing for specificity, tracking context across a conversation, and synthesizing behavior across the full session.
The test isn't whether it can ask good questions. The test is whether it can recognize a bad answer to a good question — and follow up intelligently. The best tools can. The weaker ones cannot. That's what your evaluation should focus on.

The honest answer is: AI interviewing done well is more consistent and more auditable than human screening at scale. But it requires deliberate governance — bias audits, rubric review, human oversight of decisions — to live up to that potential.
